Breast Lift or Breast Augmentation - Which Procedure Suits You the Best?

Are you someone who wants a procedure to make your breasts aesthetically pleasing but is not sure which method to opt ? Are you confused about the options and want the ideal one for yourself? It is recommended that you speak with a plastic surgeon who has years of expertise in performing cosmetic breast surgeries.

The two popular procedures are breast augmentation and breast lift.  Each one is a specific procedure that provides breast enhancement by achieving certain goals. These must be chosen based on your needs, the volume and size of your breasts, the extent of droopiness or sagging, and your overall health.

Breast Augmentation - What Do You Need to Know?

Do you desire bigger breasts and a larger cup size? Then breast augmentation is the appropriate breast enhancement option.  This procedure involves inserting a silicone implant in the breast pocket created by a small cut in the breast under the fold.  The surgeon can predetermine the implant type, size, and volume with proper measurements. The result is a breast with more volume, a rounded shape, and a perkier and fuller look. To obtain larger breasts, women who have lost weight or had prior pregnancies may also choose to receive implants.

Breast implants do not affect milk production and breastfeeding. Breast augmentation can also be done non-surgically. Thus, breast enhancement without surgery is also an option.

The recovery after implant surgery is 2 weeks, and one can return to regular workouts after 6 weeks.

Breast implants are mainly suited for breast enlargement for women who

  • Desire increase in the volume of breast
  • Seek an increase in upper pole fullness and mild lift of the nipple. ( for grade 1 and 2 sagging )
  • Healthy patients 22 years or older can opt for silicone implants

Silicone implants generally have a warranty of ten to fifteen years. It can have general wear and tear after this time frame and may need a replacement.

Breast Lift or Mastopexy - what you need to know

If you are someone looking only for a correction of your sagging breasts and need a lifting, tightening and a little volume In the upper pole, then a breast lift is the ideal solution. Breast volume loss can occur due to pregnancy and lactation, weight loss, ageing and generally due to any stress, lifestyle issues and illness.

The primary goal of breast lift is uplifting the sagging breast. Thus, this is also known as breast uplift surgery. Moreover, in this procedure, the motive is to achieve the correction or elevation of the position of the nipple with a minor correction of volume in the flattened upper pole and, overall, a tightening of breasts. The result is breasts which are naturally youthful and perkier; it is like turning back the clock by a few years.

There are non-surgical breast lift options available. However, the essential 3 types of breast lift procedures.

  • Periareolar Lift - This is suitable for someone with a wide nipple areola and minimal grade 1 sagging. The incision is placed along the areolar border, excess dark areolar skin is removed, and the breast tissue is lifted.
  • Vertical Lift or Lollipop Lift - This procedure is suitable for grade 2 or 3 breast sagging with adequate volume and skin quality. The incision is similar to the periareolar but extends vertically to the lower breast fold.
  • Inverted T or Anchor Lift - Apt for someone who has more lax and loose skin with a grade 3 or 4 sagging of breasts. The same incision as in vertical lift is extended on either side of it, along the lower fold of the breast. All the excess skin is removed, the nipple and breast tissue are repositioned back to a higher location, and the breast tissue is tightened on itself.

Breast lift is ideal for women who:

  • Do not seek an increase in volume and cup size of breasts
  • Have adequate breast tissue to manipulate and position it with the nipple in a favorable location.
  • Grades 1, 2, 3, or 4 sagging with adequate volume.
  • Healthy and non-smokers

Breast Lift with Breast Implants

Some women, especially those who are very skinny, may have sagging breasts and minimal volume or tissue in the breasts. It is becoming increasingly popular among such women to undergo a breast lift and simultaneous implant insertion. This corrects the volume loss and droopiness of breasts. It can be done in a periareolar or vertical mastopexy pattern.
