The youthful shape and firmness of your breasts can change over time due to pregnancy, nursing, weight gain and subsequent loss, aging and gravity. Women who are unhappy with their sagging breasts may consider breast lift surgery or Mastopexy. A mastopexy procedure removes excess skin and tightens the surrounding tissue to reshape , lift and firm up the breasts. Sometimes it can be combined with an augmentation breast surgery to increase the size and firmness of breasts.Best results are achieved in women with small sagging breasts. In cases of heavy breasts, Dr Sandhya may recommend a Breast reduction surgery which is longer lasting. If you are planning for a pregnancy, it is best to postpone the surgery as it can offset the results. Before you have the surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with Dr.Sandhya.
To help prepare for a mastopexy, you may be asked to undergo a baseline mammogram. If you are a smoker, you will be asked to stop smoking well in advance. Avoid aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs that can prolong your bleeding time.
Breast lift surgery can be done as a day-care procedure, usually under general anesthesia. A variety of incisions and techniques are available to remove excess skin and reposition the nipple-areola in ptotic breasts. The most common technique involves an anchor shaped incision which goes around the nipple-areola ,drops vertically down and follows the curve of breast crease. The nipple areola is moved to a higher position and the breast tissue is redistributed to create a upper pole fullness of a youthful breast.
If you have a small breast with minimal sagging, you can undergo a doughnut mastopexy. In this procedure a doughnut shaped skin is removed around the areola and surrounding skin is reattached to create a lifted look of breasts with minimal scarring.
If you wish to increase the size of your breasts, an implant is placed underneath the breast tissue or below your muscles of chest wall .
Following your surgery, your new breasts will be swollen and bruised for one or two weeks. You will have dressings and bandages along the incisions which will be replaced by a support bra after 48 hours. You will be advised to wear a support bra for 6 weeks. Post-surgical swelling resolve over time and incision lines fade with time. You may experience some loss of sensation in nipples and breast following surgery, which slowly returns over the next weeks or months.
